1 in 5 Canadians will suffer preventable vision loss
Vision loss can strike a person at any age, having a profound effect on their wellbeing. Since many eye diseases have no symptoms, people may not even know that they have eye disease right now. It is estimated that more than 8 million Canadians are currently living with eye disease, of which 1.2 million, and growing, suffer from vision loss.
Prevention instead of reaction
The good news is that early detection, diagnosis and timely preventative treatment of many eye conditions minimizes vision loss, and in some cases, may even restore vision. Preventative eye disease screening, while important for all, should be of particular interest for people over the age of 40, diabetics, a family history of eye disease, and school aged children.
